When it comes to striking that perfectly-calibrated balance between quirk and refinement, no one rivals Sir Paul Smith. Known primarily for his men's suits, the Nottingham native consistently harnesses what everyone loves about the classic English dandy – the colorful, cheerful eccentricity of style that somehow never loses touch with the sophistication of Savile Row (where, as it happens, Sir Paul once worked). But how does that aesthetic — clear and comprehensible for men's suits, which are inherently formal and can then be made fun — translate to womenswear?
If Mr. Smith's menswear is business in the front, party in the back, with suits that look boardroom appropriate on the surface but hide elements of the avant-garde underneath, his womenswear is just the opposite. It's party in the front — right out there, for everyone to see. That was very much the Congo-inspired vibe of Sir Paul's 2010 spring-summer collection, which hit the London catwalk Monday.
The sweltering ballroom in London's luxurious Claridge's hotel felt for a moment like a Caribbean island, with sweat pouring down the brow, beautiful people swirling round and summertime beats blasting on the speakers — even some Caribbean-modified Jackson 5 when the designer himself paraded out at the end of the show. The mood fit the collection, with designs destined for a hot, summertime beach party. Light, off-the-shoulder wrap mini-dresses; fitted tweed and checked blazers over pastel mini shorts; breezy lampshade skirts hitting just above the knee — all of these looks communicated party prep gone appropriately zany. The feeling was Ralph Lauren come unbuttoned; Lilly Pulitzer finally letting her hair down and experimenting with high-inducing primary colors. That is, the designs were staid yacht classics with a seriously Afro-Caribbean, seriously Paul Smith injection of spirit and creativity.
As always, Mr. Smith's designs were marked by unconventional and bright color combinations, such as hot pink and red. The patterns were provocative and pieced together daringly, with paisley-meets-animal-hide going up against traditional pinstripes, as well as numerous playful reworkings of the classic Paul Smith color bars. One of the most striking pieces was a form-fitting, off-the-shoulder black minidress with the color bars slashed and sliced horizontally through the front. You gladly would sip pina coladas with any woman confident and colorful enough to pull off these looks, because ultimately the designs succeed exactly where Sir Paul does himself: they don't take themselves too seriously and they're always game for a little fun.
Caught in the rain with us at Claridge's were a number of big names, including U.K. Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, fashion writer Hilary Alexander, BFC chief and Jaeger-owner Harold Tillman, and others.
